Two Moodle instances, one login - is it possible?

Apologies, very much a newbie in terms of authentication stuff, so please bear with me... have had a look through the forums and can't find any advice on this.

My company run two Moodle instances - MoodleA and MoodleB - hosted on two different servers. Essentially, MoodleA is a site people can access free, MoodleB they pay for. On MoodleA, users can self-create accounts and are given enrolment keys for courses, and we have around 6,000 registered users.  On MoodleB, we manually create users and enrol them on courses, and we have around 600 registered users.

I was wondering if there is a way of setting up automated authentication (or even being able to 'copy' users across) so that the users who we have manually created on MoodleB can use the same login to access MoodleA, without them or us recreating the user account? I'm guessing not, but thought I'd ask for advice, since these forums are endlessly helpful...

We wouldn't particularly need the users from MoodleA to the able to login to MoodleB, but it wouldn't matter if they could, as they wouldn't be able to access the paid for material without us enrolling them on the course.

Thanks...

Cat
