In my experience students frequently do not do what they are told even when they are trying to do what they are told. Here in a part of the UK where name conventions are fairly standard I used to have problems getting students login. Even if they used the correct name they would sometimes not be able to type in a single word password without any unusual characters. So telling a whole class that everyone had the same password such as window or table was not enough to get them logged in.
