Thanks for your feedback.
Before I rewrote the code the 'ldap user sync' didn't complete. I should say I stopped it because I never get the prompt back (maximum I've waited is probably around an hour).
After I rewrote the code, to create a permanent table, it took 4 hours 40 mins (the DBA ran the query).
Our DBA even tried to optimise the query; he didn't gained much; down to 4 hours 23 mins .
Issues with usernames?
I'm not sure. I'm not sure new users even need to be created.
The JOIN that the tools does is to find out if new users are in LDAP and not in Moodle.
The JOIN is executed regardless; and ,I think, because the tables are 'large', it takes time (but I didn't expect 4 hours).
We'll see what we can try next.
